The year is 1873, eight years after the end of the civil war. During the war the Ozarks were ravaged by both armies. The tensions between the citizens have not settled. It has become a place rife with poverty and banditry. Water stops - call jerkwater towns - along the rail are frequent targets of these criminals. Your train has broken down in one such town.
