Don't Forget to Play by Hyla Vanden Bosch
Hyla Vanden Bosch creates paintings, mixed media artworks and conceptual artworks. By focusing on her own mental health, Vanden Bosch often creates work using creative game tactics, but these are never permissive. Play is a serious matter: during the game, different rules apply than in everyday life and even everyday objects undergo transformation into tools used to apply ink and acrylic to canvas.
Her paintings never show the complete story as the importance of her work is in the creation and experience. This results in the fact that the audience can imagine an own interpretation without be hindered by societal influences and concrete realism. By composing environments in which viewers can become participants, she welcomes them into the experience that is play without boundaries. There is no finished imagine to achieve therefore only therapeutic transitions can take place. The finished piece is an added component. The mark of a memory hoping to inspire future play.
By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator, she tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.
