Come to the Apollon for a day of Dance! This special event features colorful bellydancing and lots fun! Special guest Rahil from Kansas City will be teaching an enjoyable and educational Workshop on Folkloric dances of Egypt, and then enjoy watching or participating in a lovely informal “hafla” (dance/gathering) where local dancers will perform, and attendees can even learn a few moves in short open dance sessions! This event is family-friendly.
You may register to participate in the workshop which includes admission to the evening Hafla or you may attend just the Halfa. Space is limited, so plan to register early.
Workshop (Includes Hafla):
Folkloric Dances of Egypt
3-5 pm Saturday July 13th
Cost $30 per person, and includes admission to the evening Hafla
Underlying belly dance is a rich history of movement, influenced by many people and their folk dances. In this workshop, Rahil will take you across Egypt in looking at a handful of these folk dances. She will show some pictures of costuming and discuss the context of the dances. Then, dancers will learn a combination that could be used as a "character" piece or could be incorporated into a more general belly dance routine. From the south of Egypt, we examine Saiidi dance, from the north, the Alexandrian "melaya leff" dances, from the west, the Bedouin Hegallah, and from the east, Simsimmiyya. Please bring a veil or a melaya leff if you have one.
Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, such as yoga pants and a t-shirt, and bare feet, socks or dance shoes such as ballet slippers are fine. If you own a bellydance hipscarf and would like to wear one, that is fine too, though not mandatory.
Hafla (dance performance & gathering):
Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 7:30pm
Cost $5 admission (free to workshop attendees)
Light snacks and beverages will be available.
